In addition to hollowing out acorns, they are also known for attacking hickory nuts. it just makes it a little more interesting. Here, near a very large bur oak tree that is a prolific acorn producer, I counted at least a dozen grubs. They arise from oak seedlings whose tops are killed by fire. This adult weevil was found in mid-September, while those grubs were found in early October.
